Europe@War
On first appearances, Europe has enjoyed an unprecedented period of peace since 1945: after nearly 2,000 years of bitter and, at times, massive, wars, over 70 years have passed without any major armed conflict.
Reality is quite different. The Cold War – a unique showdown between the United States and its allies in the West, and the Soviet Union and its allies in the East – not only dominated the military build-up and thinking for decades, but caused numerous crises, interstate conflicts, local uprisings, special- and clandestine operations, and major incidents. Dozens of other emergencies erupted elsewhere around the continent during the same period and many coups resulted in dramatic changes on the political scene. Europe experienced relatively little peace since the end of the Cold War, too: yet additional, often unexpected but gruesome wars have been fought ever since.
Following the patterns set up by our four earlier @War series, Europe@War replicates the same format to provide new insights into not only well-known, but also little-known or entirely unknown aspects of armed conflicts, and military forces in Europe since 1945. Based on continuously increasing amounts of documentation unearthed from official archives, and narratives from participants and eyewitnesses, this new series offers remarkably revealing accounts of wars, campaigns, battles, incidents, and military units, providing intricate details on strategy, tactics, capabilities, intentions, and conduct of combat operations. Military-related affairs in Europe duringthe last 70 years have also left their traces in the form of the development of new types of armament, new types of units and entire military branches, construction of new types of military facilities, and in the experiences of every-day life in diverse military services – in the air, on the ground, and at sea.
As usual for all @War series, each volume within the Europe@War series is richly illustrated by original photographs, detailed colour profiles and diagrams, and maps of relevant geographic areas and specific combat operations, thus providing a unique and indispensable source of reference.
