Greece at War, 1940–1944 Volume 1 opens with the rise of Ioannis Metaxas to power in 1936 and the subsequent influence of foreign powers. It then covers the fierce resistance to the Italian invasion, which forced Hitler to send German troops to complete the task, including the battle for Crete. The formation of the ELAS and EDES Greek resistance groups and their operations against the German, Bulgarian and Italian occupiers are covered in depth, as is the support provided by the SOE.
