Asia@War

The Asia@War series comprises specialist books on Asian military history from the beginning of the twentieth century up until the present day.

The vast continent of Asia, its islands and archipelagos, and the skies above them have seen extensive warfare for much of the twentieth century. Great empires have come to grief fighting in Asia and yet few seem to learn the lessons of those that have failed before them or to heed the adage to ‘never fight a land war in Asia’: the US was stymied in Korea; France lost Indo-China and the US would later withdraw from the same battlefields in ignominy abandoning their regional allies; the Soviets would come perilously close to nuclear confrontation with the People’s Republic of China and long sour relations between the two communist giants of the Cold War; the Soviets would fail in their intervention to prop up a failed regime in Afghanistan. Newly independent India and Pakistan would almost immediately come to blows and build a long-lasting enmity with battles, wars and insurgencies fought all along their mutual borders.

The Asia@War series aims to bring a nuanced understanding to the military history of this vast continent that is home to the two most populous nations on Earth. As far as possible drawing upon original source material from regional archives and written by authors with firsthand knowledge of the region, Asia@War looks at the underlying causes of conflict, the actors and forces engaged, and their organisation, tactics and equipment.

Each volume is richly illustrated with original photographs, maps of the relevant geographic areas and specific combat operations, and specially commissioned colour artworks showing the combatants, vehicles, aircraft and other equipment used in Asia’s wars.

The Asia@War series thus provides unique in-depth insight, and is an indispensable source of reference for the multitude of wars and campaigns, large and small, fought in Asia from the earliest days of the twentieth century up to the present.
