Chinese Military Aviation 1912-1937 Volume 4 traces the Chinese Navy’s design and construction of aircraft, as well as the activities of several early provincial air forces – and the wars and conflicts in which they were involved.

The Chinese Naval Aviation Service holds a prominent place in the history of Chinese indigenous aircraft design and, from 1918, focused on developing its own aircraft types. Various provinces also maintained their own air forces, which were involved in several conflicts in which air operations played a prominent part, before these disparate forces began to coalesce into larger organisations. Many European, American and Soviet types were operated, and a German Junkers belonging to Feng Yuxiang’s air force in Henan was involved in one of the first dogfights in Chinese aviation history.
