The Africa@War series comprises specialist books on African military history from the beginning of the twentieth century up until the present day.

The public perception of the military history of warfare in Africa is dominated by images of hopelessly unprofessional regular militaries that can neither maintain their equipment nor operate under the conditions of conventional warfare. Other narratives emphasise the deployment of rag-tag militias and child soldiers of use only in terrorising the local population.

Africa’s reality is strikingly different. Over the last 70 years, numerous African nations have developed highly professional and combat-effective militaries that have distinguished themselves in conventional and non-conventional combat operations. However, the military history of many of the conflicts in question remains a severely under-studied topic, and when studied it is often through a Western and anglophone prism and largely ignores local experience.

The Africa@War series aims to change the often-misleading perceptions of warfare in Africa during the twentieth century and beyond. The series emphases in-depth studies of conflicts on this continent, providing geographic and socioeconomic background to the conflicts in question as well as detail of the military organisations, their equipment, capabilities and intentions, strategy and tactics, and combat operations. Each volume is richly illustrated with original photographs, maps of the relevant geographic areas and specific combat operations, and specially commissioned colour artworks showing the combatants, vehicles, aircraft and other equipment used in Africa.

The Africa@War series thus provides unique in-depth insight and is an indispensable source of reference for the multitude of wars and campaigns, large and small, fought on the African continent from the earliest days of the twentieth century up to the present day.
