The Middle East@War series examines the history of conflict in the largely-Arab dominated states of the Middle East from the earliest days of the twentieth century up to the present day.

The very term ‘Middle East’ became synonymous with conflict and strife during twentieth century and peace in the region seems ever more elusive in the first quarter of the twenty-first century. Often seemingly fuelled by differences between religions, or even between factions within religions, conflict in the Middle East has been exasperated by outside intervention and interference as foreign powers have sought to secure access to rich fossil fuel reserves, or to exert a measure of control over those reserves. The numerous wars between Israel and many of the region’s Arab states during the Cold War era were often seen in the West as an extension of the Cold War, and yet while the USSR did indeed provide arms in great abundance to a number of states that opposed Israel, these states held little in common with the Soviets and could barely be described as ‘allied’ in even the loosest of terms or to be proponents of Moscow’s world view.

The Middle East@War series seeks to tell the military history of the many conflicts that have wracked this region and as far as possible include the perspective of all parties involved, be they from Egypt, Iran, Iraq, Israel, Syria or from the many other nations of the region and look beyond the old colonial, Cold War and religious stereotypes that often undermine the impartiality of other histories.

This series emphases in-depth studies of the conflicts in this region, providing geographic and socioeconomic background to the conflicts in question as well as detail of the military organisations, their equipment, capabilities and intentions, strategy and tactics, and combat operations. Each volume is richly illustrated with original photographs, maps of the relevant geographic areas and specific combat operations, and specially commissioned colour artworks showing the combatants, vehicles, aircraft and other equipment used in the Middle East.
