In 1968, Egypt formed No. 62 Squadron, a specialist MiG-17 unit trained to locate and destroy Israeli HAWK surface-to-air missile sites. Transferred to Syria in 1972 under the command of Lieutenant Colonel Fikry el-Gindy, the squadron played a crucial role in supporting Arab air operations during the October 1973 Arab-Israeli War.
Published in English for the first time, el-Gindy’s account provides a detailed, first-hand narrative of the squadron’s preparations, training, and high-risk suppression-of-enemy-air-defence missions over the Golan Heights. Drawing on the experiences of those involved, the book offers rare insight into the Egyptian Air Force’s deployment in Syria and the realities of aerial warfare against a technologically superior opponent.
Illustrated with rare photographs, detailed maps and colour aircraft profiles, Eagles over the Golan makes an important contribution to the history of the October 1973 Arab-Israeli War.
