Dewald Venter
Prof Dewald Venter is an accomplished academic, military historian, and published author with a distinctive focus on the psychological, cultural, and heritage dimensions of conflict. He holds a PhD in Tourism Management and is currently an Associate Professor at the Vaal University of Technology, where he specialises in travel motivation, life domains, quality of life.
Renowned for his research into military heritage, dark tourism, and adventure combat sports, Prof Venter has authored numerous peer reviewed publications and conference presentations. His pioneering work explores the intersection of personal well-being, tourism, and military experience, particularly among veterans and re-enactors.
A recognised authority on armoured warfare history in Southern Africa, a frequent contributor to respected military publications such as Classic Military Vehicle and Tank Encyclopaedia. He has also served as a military vehicle consultant to several international gaming studios.
Prof Venter is an honorary council member of the SA Armour Museum and a frequent guest speaker on South African military vehicle history. His passion for preserving and interpreting South Africa’s armoured legacy is evident in both his academic and public engagement work. Through his writing, he offers unique, experience-based insights into the realities of combat, esprit de corps, and the lived experiences of soldiers.
