Air War over Korea 1950-1953 Volume 1 outlines the causes of the Korean War and covers its first six months, focusing on the war in the air and the strategic build-up of the two main antagonists, the UN and the Communist coalitions.
The Korean War began on 25 June 1950 with a surprise assault by North Korean forces against their southern neighbour. What was intended as a short operation quickly evolved into the first large-scale and deadly conflict of the Cold War. Air power proved crucial in halting the North Korean offensive and enabled a counter-offensive by the UN, led by the USA. Total air superiority in the autumn of 1950 raised hopes that UN troops could go home by the end of the year, but the arrival of the MiG-15 and Chinese support for North Korea altered the balance both in the air and on the ground.
