War in Ukraine Volume 17

War in Ukraine, Volume 17: Soldiers of the Russo-Ukrainian War, Their Uniforms and Equipment brings the first year of the full-scale invasion to life through 22 colour illustrations by artist Andrew Wang. Eleven Ukrainian and eleven Russian soldiers are each captured at a precise place and moment, from Hostomel in February to Avdiivka in December, together forming a vivid history of the fighting in 2022.

Each plate is paired with a detailed commentary chapter, giving the story of the soldier’s unit, the battle he was fighting, and an analysis of his equipment from helmet to boots. Along the way, new details of both famous and unsung episodes are described for the first time, such as the struggle for the Vuhlehirska Power Station outside Bakhmut, or the experiences of the 810th Guards Naval Infantry Brigade in Mariupol. The volume also takes care to capture the diversity of the forces involved, allowing International Legionnaires, Wagner mercenaries, and BARS volunteers to stand alongside their counterparts from more regular formations. Finally, the volume documents and analyses the rich material culture of the war, including a wide array of unit and personal patches to accompany each figure.

Essential for modellers, wargamers, uniform enthusiasts and anyone seeking to understand the war at the level of the individual soldier, it opens a new sub-series within Helion's War in Ukraine series that will follow both sides' uniforms and equipment through the subsequent years of the war.
