Studies in British Military Thought (signed by author) : Debates with Fuller and Liddell Hart

Condition

Very good in fair to good dust jacket.

The original black hardback binding appears firm and square, with minor shelf wear at the extremities. The page edges show light age-related toning, but the contents appear clean and securely bound. Signed and inscribed by Brian Holden Reid to Professor Brian Bond on the front free endpaper, dated 18 June 1998. From Professor Bond’s personal library. No other annotations are visible in the pages examined.

The original dust jacket shows noticeable general rubbing, surface marking and age-related discolouration. The spine is faded and marked, while the rear panel has several areas of staining and soiling. There is additional wear and creasing around the edges, corners and spine ends.

A collection of twelve analytical essays examining two of the most influential figures in twentieth-century British military thought: Major-General J. F. C. Fuller and Captain Sir Basil Liddell Hart. Brian Holden Reid explores their ideas concerning mechanised warfare, tactics, operational art, strategy and war as a social and political phenomenon. He also considers the markedly different personalities and intellectual approaches that shaped their work and subsequent reputations.

An important signed association copy from the personal library of Professor Brian Bond. The author has written a substantial presentation inscription on the front free endpaper: “For Brian Bond — whatever merit this book has is owed to your scholarly example. With all good wishes, Brian Holden Reid. 18 June 1998.”

The wording provides a particularly significant connection between author and recipient, explicitly recognising Bond’s influence upon the book. Both men were distinguished military historians closely associated with the Department of War Studies at King’s College London.

First edition, first printing, published by the University of Nebraska Press in 1998. Includes notes, a bibliography of the principal writings of Fuller and Liddell Hart, and an index.
