A detailed operational history of Napoleon’s spring campaign of 1813, concentrating on the rebuilding of the French army after the catastrophic retreat from Russia and the campaign culminating in the Battle of Bautzen.
James R. Arnold begins with the destruction of the Grande Armée in 1812 and examines Napoleon’s extraordinary effort to create a new army in only a matter of months. The book considers recruitment, conscription, cavalry shortages and the problems of replacing experienced officers and men while the Sixth Coalition prepared to renew the war.
The narrative follows the movements of the French, Russian and Prussian armies through Saxony, including the Battle of Möckern and the strategic convergence that led to the spring campaign. Particular attention is given to Napoleon’s command decisions, Allied planning and the difficulties faced by both sides in coordinating increasingly large armies.
The Battle of Bautzen in May 1813 forms the centrepiece of the study. Arnold reconstructs the fighting in detail, examining troop movements, terrain, command decisions and the opportunities missed by Napoleon despite his tactical victory.
The volume is extensively illustrated with contemporary portraits and historical images and contains numerous detailed campaign and battlefield maps. It provides a substantial specialist account of the 1813 campaign and Napoleon’s attempt to recover strategically after the disaster in Russia.
