Condition

Good condition overall for their age. All three volumes have been rebacked in red cloth, with the retained original gilt-lettered spine panels laid on top of the rebacked spine's upper end. The boards have light rubbing and marking, with some wear to the edges and corners. The restored bindings appear firm and serviceable.

The page edges are browned and dust marked. Internally, the leaves show general age toning and scattered foxing, which is considerably heavier on some of the engraved plates and their tissue guards. Some plates also have visible damp staining or tide marks. An old ink ownership inscription is present on a preliminary blank, together with pencil or ink shelf markings to the endpapers. An old bookseller’s or catalogue clipping has been pasted onto one endpaper.

The main text remains generally clean and readable, with no extensive annotation seen in the pages examined. Please refer to the photographs for the exact condition.

A scarce complete three-volume first edition of Eliot Warburton’s substantial biography and documentary history of Prince Rupert of the Rhine and the Royalist Cavaliers.

Drawing extensively upon private correspondence and original manuscripts, Warburton traces Rupert’s early life, his prominent role as a cavalry commander during the English Civil War, his years in exile and his later naval, scientific and colonial activities following the Restoration. The work also provides a broader account of the Royalist commanders, campaigns and political personalities associated with Rupert.

Published in London by Richard Bentley in 1849. Illustrated with engraved portraits and other plates across the three volumes, including military material. An important nineteenth-century source for the life of Prince Rupert and the history of the Royalist cause.
