This two-volume set provides a detailed military history of Argentina’s descent into armed insurgency and counter-insurgency from the 1950s through to the end of the 1970s—events that formed the precursor to, and then expanded into, the notorious Dirty War.
Volume 1 examines the origins and growth of anti-government guerrilla movements after the overthrow of Juan Domingo Perón in 1955, tracing the rise of armed organisations such as the ERP and Montoneros, alongside the government response and the security forces deployed up to Perón’s return in 1974.
Volume 2 continues from Perón’s death and the presidency of Isabel Martínez de Perón, covering the escalation of violence, the launch of Operativo Independencia, the 1976 coup d’état, and the full development of the Dirty War. It explores the motivations, methods and operations of both insurgent and government forces during one of the most politically charged periods in modern Argentine history.
Both volumes are richly illustrated with original photographs, specially commissioned maps and full-colour artworks, forming one of the most comprehensive studies of Argentina’s 1970s internal conflict.
