The spectacular success of the Royal Navy during the Revolutionary and Napoleonic Wars heralded an age when Britannia ruled the waves. The change in naval tactics which brought the most resounding victories came not from the great admirals of the period but from an Edinburgh businessman, John Clerk of Eldin. He devised tactics to overcome those of French fleets and create decisive engagements, going against policies pursued by the Admiralty. But how much of a contribution did Clerk make? Never thoroughly analysed before, detailed research has discovered sources confirming that Nelson fought at the Nile and Trafalgar, using Clerk’s methodology, as did Admirals Howe, Duncan, Durham, Rainier, and many others.

At the heart of Clerk’s plan was his awareness that attacking the enemy line in a position that overwhelmed and disrupted it would result in the destruction and capture of the enemy. Many commanders, including Nelson, advised their captains to study Clerk’s works, which directly led to the adoption of these methods at the most critical naval engagements of the Age of Sail: Trafalgar, Nile, St Vincent, and others. Despite his significant impact on Britain’s naval heritage, very little has been written on this unsung pioneer of naval warfare. The Untold Story of Nelson's Tactician traces Clerk’s influence and the interconnected nature of eighteenth-century intellectual and naval society, from Lord Nelson to Robert Adam, Sir Walter Scott, and Adam Smith.
