The French Army of the War of the Austrian Succession 1740-1748 is an in-depth study of Louis XV’s army. This second volume covers the first part of the French national infantry regiments. The first section covers their drill for both the men and the officers, their uniforms, their arms and their colours. Each aspect is clearly described in detail and illustrated. The second section looks at the individual regiments in order of precedence, their uniforms and colours, including their composition, successive commanders and weaponry.
This study is based on original contemporary books and documents conserved in different collections and archives, some never published before in English, and builds on the research of the late Pierre Charrie, eminent French vexillologist, Jean Louis Vial (who has published his study of the French infantry of the Seven Years War which picks up where this study ends), together with the staff of the archives and the records of La Sabretache; Société d’Etudes d’Histoire Militaire. Many other researchers have contributed the results of their work. The illustrations are based on contemporary engravings, sketches, watercolours and paintings together with original artefacts and descriptions from contemporary sources.
Subsequent volumes will cover the second part of the French infantry regiments including their supply train and rations, followed by the foreign infantry regiments, the cavalry, dragoons, artillery, light infantry and much more.
