To Conquer and to Keep: Suchet and the War for Eastern Spain, 1809–1814
Volumes 1 & 2 by Yuhan Kim

This two-volume set presents the most comprehensive study to date of Marshal Louis-Gabriel Suchet’s campaigns and administration in Eastern Spain during the Peninsular War. Known as Napoleon’s most successful commander in Spain, Suchet was the only general to be promoted to Marshal for his achievements in the Peninsula.

Volume 1 (1809–1811) focuses on the early campaigns in Aragon, including the sieges of Mequinenza and Tortosa, and Suchet’s defeat of Blake’s Spanish army at María and Belchite. It explores how Suchet established control over Aragon through military success and sound governance, turning a hostile region into a relatively stable French-held province.

Volume 2 (1811–1814) continues with the invasion and occupation of Valencia, culminating in the Battle of Sagunto and the Siege of Valencia—one of the greatest French victories in the war. It also examines the growing resistance, the impact of guerrilla warfare, and the eventual erosion of French power as the tide of the war shifted.

Both volumes feature detailed maps, orders of battle, and contemporary illustrations, providing readers with a vivid and authoritative look at one of the lesser-known but most effectively conducted French campaigns of the Napoleonic era. An essential resource for anyone interested in the Peninsular War, Napoleonic leadership, or military strategy.
