A collection of essays by international scholars examining the military, political and human dimensions of the final year of the Second World War in Europe. Edited by Charles F. Brower IV in association with the Roosevelt Study Center, the volume analyses the period from the Normandy landings to the defeat of Nazi Germany.
The contributors consider Roosevelt and Churchill’s grand strategy, Eisenhower’s broad-front approach, the Allied strategic bombing campaign, Germany’s defensive operations and the influence of military geography on the fighting in the Netherlands. Particular attention is given to Operation Market Garden, the Canadian campaign to open the Scheldt estuary, the Ardennes offensive, the capture of Walcheren and the experiences of soldiers and civilians during liberation and occupation.
Combining strategic, operational and tactical analysis with eyewitness experience and expert commentary, this is a valuable study of the complex military and political problems faced by the Allies during the closing stages of the war in Europe. Includes maps, bibliographical references and an index.
