Richard Griffiths examines the complex relationship between sections of British opinion and Nazi Germany during the years 1933–1939. Rather than focusing on formal appeasement policy alone, the book investigates individuals, organisations and political movements within Britain that viewed developments in Germany with sympathy or admiration.

Drawing on original documentary sources, Griffiths explores subjects including fascist organisations, anti-Semitism, pro-German movements and influential personalities, tracing how attitudes shifted during the rise of Nazi power and the approach of war. The study follows these developments from the early enthusiasm of some groups through to the growing isolation of extremist movements by the late 1930s.
