Second Hand Typescript Letters from France, June-October 1915

A bound sequence of contemporary carbon typescripts of letters written from France by Claude E. Temperley of the Rifle Brigade between June and October 1915. The volume contains 56 pages, typed on one side only, with several loosely inserted typescript notes concerning his military service.

Temperley was commissioned into the Rifle Brigade (Special Reserve) in 1914. He served in France with the 2nd Battalion until wounded in early 1915, then returned to France and joined the 4th Battalion in June. These letters record his experiences with the 4th Battalion, particularly in the Armentieres and Bois-Grenier sector. They combine observations on service near the trenches with personal news and the everyday details of correspondence from the front.

The accompanying service notes trace Temperley's movements beyond the period covered by the letters, including his later service in Salonika. The letters and notes are later bound in half green calf with green cloth boards.

Condition is good overall. The binding is sound and shows light rubbing and surface marks. The typescript leaves show age-toning, occasional spotting and handling marks; an early leaf has marks from a paperclip. Please examine the accompanying photographs for condition and contents.
