A substantial clothbound typescript war diary attributed to Captain J. S. Davenport of the 1st Battalion, Bedfordshire Regiment. The principal account covers 14 August to 11 November 1914 and runs to 168 numbered pages. Preliminary notes record the battalion’s mobilisation on 4 and 9 August, and the volume includes additional notes concerning later wartime service.
Davenport’s entry for 14 August describes the battalion’s journey from Mullingar to Belfast and its embarkation aboard the S.S. Oronsa. The diary follows the 1st Bedfords through the opening campaign of the British Expeditionary Force, including the retreat, the fighting at Le Cateau and the later battles in Flanders. It also contains material recording officers of the battalion and their wartime fates.
A detailed personal account of the original BEF’s 1914 campaign, with particular interest for researchers of the Bedfordshire Regiment and the opening months of the Western Front.
