A family-prepared memorial volume containing typescript extracts from the diary of Lieutenant Richard Charles Graves-Sawle of the 2nd Battalion, Coldstream Guards, dated from 12 August to 2 November 1914.
Attractively leather bound with gilt spine lettering, a Coldstream Guards device on the front board and gilt page edges, the volume is housed in a fitted case. It includes a portrait of Graves-Sawle, a photograph captioned “View South from Chavonne,” and a hand-drawn map of the area near Ypres marking a grave and the approximate place where he was killed.
The extracts cover the opening months of the British Expeditionary Force’s campaign. Graves-Sawle was killed in action near Ypres on 2 November 1914, aged 26—the final date covered by the diary. He is commemorated on the Menin Gate. A moving personal record of the 1914 campaign, preserved in a family memorial presentation.
