Typescript diary by Captain Norman Archibald Orr-Ewing, DSO, of the Scots Guards, written while attached to the 1st Battalion, Irish Guards. It covers the battalion’s fighting during the First Battle of Ypres in October and November 1914.

Orr-Ewing records its movements, trench positions and heavy losses. Following the death of Major Herbert Stepney, he took command of the depleted battalion on 7 November. His efforts to rally the Irish Guards earned him the Distinguished Service Order.

The volume is bound in maroon boards with a black cloth spine and gilt lettering, “N. O. E. 1914,” on the front. A handwritten inscription presents it as a Christmas 1917 gift from Orr-Ewing to a recipient at Tile House; an Ernest J. Waring bookplate provides a further ownership mark.

A personal account of First Ypres and an appealing presentation copy with a direct association with its author.
