A substantial visual survey of Russian military uniforms from the final decade of Imperial rule through the early Soviet period and the end of the Second World War.
The volume reproduces the uniform studies of German military artist Herbert Knötel Jr. The first section presents approximately 100 images covering the Imperial Russian Army between 1907 and 1920, including officers, enlisted men, guards, cavalry and other formations. A further group of illustrations depicts Russian and Soviet uniforms from 1921 to 1946.
The book also includes Knötel’s Berlin series, a group of 45 images produced in 1945 for the United States Army’s Military Intelligence Section. These were originally intended to familiarise American and Allied personnel with the uniforms and branches of the Soviet armed forces operating in occupied Germany.
Drawn from the Anne S. K. Brown Military Collection at Brown University, the illustrations provide detailed visual evidence of uniforms, insignia, equipment and variations in dress. A valuable reference for military historians, uniform collectors, artists, reenactors and modellers.
