Good condition overall for age. Complete two-volume hardback set in original publisher's blue cloth bindings. Covers show general handling wear, light marking and rubbing, particularly to the spines and extremities. Bindings remain sound and secure. Internally generally clean with occasional spotting and age toning, some pen and pencil marks throughout. A scarce early twentieth-century military study of the Russo-Japanese War, examining the land campaigns of 1904–1905 that transformed modern military thought. Written by J. H. Anderson and published by Hugh Rees Ltd., this two-volume set analyses the principal operations of the conflict, including the Battle of Liao-Yang, the Sha Ho campaign, the strategic situation in Manchuria and the lessons learned from one of the first major industrial wars of the twentieth century.
Produced in a format intended for military education and professional study, the volumes include detailed campaign analysis, orders of battle, tactical commentary and numerous folding maps illustrating troop movements and operational theatres. The work reflects contemporary British military interest in the conflict, which profoundly influenced military doctrine before the First World War.
An increasingly uncommon set and an important primary-era military study for collectors of Russo-Japanese War material, military history libraries and students of early modern warfare.
