A substantial and influential history of the Pathans, tracing their story from antiquity through to the mid-twentieth century. Sir Olaf Caroe, former Governor of the North-West Frontier Province, combines historical narrative, geography, tribal tradition, imperial frontier policy and first-hand administrative knowledge to produce a wide-ranging account of the peoples of the Afghan-Pakistan borderlands.

The book covers early origins, Islamic expansion, the Mughal period, the rise of Afghan power, British frontier policy, tribal politics and the strategic importance of Waziristan and the North-West Frontier. Illustrated with plates and maps, including folding maps, this remains a significant reference for readers interested in Afghanistan, Pakistan, the North-West Frontier, British India, imperial history and Central Asian borderlands.
