Condition
Good condition in poor but substantially complete dust jacket.
The rare original dust jacket, priced 21/- net on the spine, is heavily browned, rubbed, soiled and foxed. There is extensive creasing and fraying around the edges, with numerous chips, tears and areas of loss, particularly at the corners, spine ends and flap folds. The principal lettering, descriptive text and rear publisher’s advertisement remain largely legible. Despite its considerable wear, the survival of the original jacket materially enhances the copy’s scarcity.
The original light-blue cloth boards show light rubbing, with wear and bumping to the corners and spine ends. The binding appears firm. The page block is age-toned and shows general dustiness and foxing, particularly to the edges, endpapers and adjoining leaves, with occasional spotting elsewhere. Pencil stock or ownership notations are present on the endpapers. The text and diagrams remain clear. Please refer to the supplied photographs for the book’s exact condition.

A scarce first edition of one of the most significant works of twentieth-century military theory. Developed from lectures delivered while J. F. C. Fuller was Chief Instructor at the Staff College, Camberley, the book attempts to establish a systematic and scientific framework through which warfare could be studied and understood.
Fuller examines the mental, moral and physical dimensions of war, together with military history, leadership, organisation, technology, economy of force and the principles of control, pressure and resistance. The work incorporates psychology, philosophy and the relationship between warfare and wider political, economic and social forces. It was initially controversial but subsequently became highly influential in the development of modern strategic thought.
This is the first edition, first impression in the scarce light-blue remainder binding, retaining its rare original 21-shilling dust jacket. Illustrated with nineteen tactical and explanatory diagrams.
