A major collaborative study of the historical development of international society and the process by which the European states system expanded to encompass the wider world.
Edited by Hedley Bull and Adam Watson, the volume brings together contributions from leading scholars examining European expansion from the early modern period onwards. The first part considers the forces behind European expansion, including military power, economic development, Russia’s relationship with the European states system, Spain and the Indies, British and Russian relations with Asian governments, and the growth of European diplomatic institutions.
Subsequent sections examine how non-European states entered international society, with chapters on the Americas, the Ottoman Empire, China, Japan and other regions. The contributors explore the interaction between European political concepts and indigenous systems, the spread of diplomacy and international law, colonialism, decolonisation and the emergence of a global society of states.
Originally published in 1984, The Expansion of International Society became an important work associated with the English School of international-relations theory and remains a significant study of the historical formation of the modern international system.
