Francis Brett Young’s Portrait of a Village presents a fictional Worcestershire community, Monk’s Norton, through its landscape, buildings and inhabitants. In his author’s note, Young explains that both the village and its people are imaginary, although the book draws on his memories and observations of rural life.

The chapters explore the village streets, social relationships, farming, the country doctor, recreation and the church. Together they create a portrait of a community shaped by its surroundings, occupations and everyday encounters. A prelude and postlude frame the eight main chapters.

Joan Hassall’s black-and-white wood engravings accompany the text, depicting rural buildings, birds, village scenes and other subjects. Illustrated endpapers provide a bird’s-eye view of Monk’s Norton, connecting the places described in the narrative. An illustration list identifies the engravings throughout the book.

Published by William Heinemann Ltd in 1937, this English-language cloth hardback will interest readers of English rural fiction, Worcestershire literature and illustrated books, particularly those interested in Joan Hassall’s work.
