Condition
Good condition for their age. Both volumes retain their original blue ribbed-cloth bindings, with gilt spine lettering and gilt facsimile signatures to the front boards. The cloth shows general rubbing, marking and fading, with bumped and worn corners and fraying and small areas of loss at the spine ends. One inner hinge is cracked, with the binding mesh exposed, although the text blocks appear to remain attached. The page edges are browned and dusty, and the contents show age-related toning, scattered foxing and occasional handling marks. The plates, maps and folding plans examined are present, although the set has not been fully collated and some folding maps show creasing, foxing and edge wear. No substantial inscriptions or annotations. Please refer to the supplied photographs for the exact condition.

Complete first-edition set of Sir Ian Hamilton’s important eyewitness account of the Russo-Japanese War, comprising Volume I, published in 1905, and Volume II, published in 1907. Hamilton accompanied the Japanese armies as a British military observer and recorded their organisation, tactics, leadership and operations in Manchuria. His detailed narrative covers the principal land campaigns and battles while offering contemporary observations on the Japanese and Russian forces and the wider lessons of the conflict for European armies. Both volumes are extensively illustrated with photographic plates, portraits, plans, sketches and numerous folding maps. An important contemporary source for the military history of the Russo-Japanese War and the development of early twentieth-century warfare.
