42nd 73rd, 1725-1907

A Short History of The Black Watch (Royal Highlanders) : 42nd 73rd, 1725-1907

Condition

Good condition overall. Original red cloth boards with gilt lettering and regimental insignia to the front board and spine. The cloth shows fading, rubbing and general age-related wear, particularly to the spine. Internally clean and sound with light foxing and age toning throughout. Folding maps appear present. There is some splitting and wear visible to the rear internal hinge, though the binding remains intact and serviceable. Housed in a protective clear cover. A solid first edition copy of an increasingly desirable regimental history.

A concise but authoritative history of one of the British Army's most famous regiments, tracing the story of The Black Watch (Royal Highlanders) from its origins in the eighteenth century through to the early twentieth century. Published in 1908, the work covers the regiment's formation, service during the major campaigns of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, the Napoleonic Wars, imperial campaigns, and its recent experiences in the South African War of 1899–1902.

Particularly valuable are the detailed accounts of the regiment's service during the Boer War, supported by contemporary sketch maps and several folding campaign maps. The volume also includes extensive lists of officers, battalions and regimental records, making it a useful reference source for military historians, genealogists and collectors of regimental histories.

An attractive Edwardian regimental history documenting the traditions, campaigns and development of the renowned Highland regiment at the height of the British Empire.
