Under French’s Command by Capt. F. S. Brereton is a classic example of early First World War juvenile fiction, written during or shortly after the conflict itself. Brereton, a prolific author of imperial and military adventure stories, brings readers directly into the experience of the Western Front under the leadership of Field Marshal Sir John French.

Blending patriotic narrative with vivid depictions of trench warfare, the book captures the tone and sentiment of wartime Britain, offering both a historical artefact and an engaging story of courage, duty, and endurance. Works such as this were instrumental in shaping contemporary perceptions of the war and remain of interest to collectors of First World War literature and early 20th-century boys’ fiction.

The volume features period cover art and includes photographic plate material, enhancing its appeal as a representative example of wartime publishing. Today, it serves as both a readable narrative and a collectible piece reflecting the cultural history of the Great War.
