Condition
Very good condition. Original red cloth boards with gilt spine lettering remain bright and sound with light rubbing and fading to the spine and minor marks to the boards. The binding is firm. The text block shows age toning though the pages remain clean and entirely readable. There are previous owner's pencil annotations to the front endpapers and a handful of neat pencil notes within the text. An attractive ex-libris label of Lieutenant-Colonel Frederick Simeon Dauncey Stephenson TD is affixed to the rear pastedown. Overall a solid and desirable early printing.

An early English edition of one of the greatest memoirs of the First World War. The Storm of Steel chronicles Ernst Jünger's experiences as a German infantry officer on the Western Front from 1915 to 1918 and has become a classic of twentieth-century military literature.
Originally published in German as In Stahlgewittern, this English translation by Basil Creighton was first issued in May 1929. This copy is the scarce Fourth Impression, published in September 1929, only a few months after the first English edition. Featuring an introduction by R. H. Mottram, the work offers an unflinching account of trench warfare, patrols, bombardments, the Somme, Cambrai and the final German offensives.
A highly collectible early English printing of one of the defining personal accounts of the Great War.
