A pair of scarce Peace After the Great War 1914–1919 commemorative books issued by the Hull Corporation to mark the end of the First World War. Each volume was presented to a local schoolchild during the city’s peace celebrations of July 1919. Bound in richly illustrated boards with patriotic flags representing the Allied nations, these books capture the pride and relief that swept Britain and its Empire following the Armistice.
Each copy retains its original printed presentation leaf with ornate border, individually inscribed and signed by Peter Gaskell C. (Lord Mayor) and Hubert Johnson (Deputy Lord Mayor and Chairman of the Education Committee). One is dedicated to Fred Marisden of Park Road School and the other to Miss Barber of Withernsea School.
Beautiful examples of civic commemoration and educational history, these Hull-issued peace books remain prized artefacts from the close of the Great War.
