Part of the British official history of the First World War, this substantial volume covers operations on the Western Front from 7 June to 10 November 1917, concentrating on the Battle of Messines and the Third Battle of Ypres, better known as Passchendaele.

The narrative begins with the carefully prepared British assault at Messines in June 1917, where the detonation of a vast system of mines beneath the German positions preceded a major offensive by General Plumer’s Second Army. It then follows the preparations for the larger Flanders offensive and the opening of Third Ypres at the end of July.

Detailed chapters examine the planning and conduct of the campaign, including the competing strategic objectives of the British high command, the battles for the Gheluvelt Plateau, the increasingly difficult ground conditions, German defensive methods and the successive British attacks that culminated in the capture of Passchendaele village in November.

As an official history, the volume draws extensively upon wartime operational records, orders, reports and contemporary military documentation. It provides detailed treatment of command decisions, troop movements, artillery operations, logistics and battlefield developments throughout one of the most controversial campaigns of the First World War.

The work includes numerous maps and operational plans, including a large folding campaign map retained in the pocket at the rear of this copy.

Originally published in 1948, this is the 1991 Imperial War Museum/Battery Press facsimile hardback reprint, issued as part of the Great War Series.
