This particular copy is Brian Bond’s own unnumbered proof copy. It is bound in plain white card covers and differs from the standard published edition, which was issued in a limited run of 300 numbered copies.

An unusual and particularly desirable association copy of Liddell Hart’s Western Front, edited by distinguished military historian Professor Brian Bond.

The volume brings together Basil Liddell Hart’s contemporary writings and personal records from his service on the Western Front during the First World War. At its centre is his Impressions of the Battle of the Somme, accompanied by wartime letters, diary extracts and occasional notes written while on active service in France and Flanders during 1915 and 1916.

The material provides an immediate perspective on Liddell Hart before his later career as one of the twentieth century’s most influential military thinkers. His letters and diary record trench conditions, troop movements, everyday military life and his experiences during the period surrounding the Battle of Loos and the Somme.

Edited and introduced by Professor Brian Bond, the volume also includes two portrait illustrations and five maps covering the Somme battlefield, 21st Division’s operations, Mametz Wood and the Ypres Salient.

The copy formed part of Professor Brian Bond’s personal library. Following his death, Helion & Company acquired his book collection from his estate providing direct provenance for this copy.

The combination of proof status, direct association with the editor and provenance makes this an especially interesting copy for collectors of First World War material, military historiography and works relating to Basil Liddell Hart.
