The first biography of General Sir Ivor Maxse, one of the most capable and innovative British Army commanders of his generation. John Baynes follows Maxse’s long military career from his education at Rugby and Sandhurst through service with the Royal Fusiliers and Coldstream Guards.

The narrative covers Maxse’s campaigning in the Sudan, including Omdurman and Fashoda, his service during the Second Boer War and his distinguished First World War career. As commander of the 18th Division, Maxse played an important role during the Battle of the Somme and the captures of Thiepval and the Schwaben Redoubt, before becoming a corps commander and Inspector-General of Training.

A valuable study of British command, tactics and military training, illustrated with black-and-white photographs, portraits and operational maps.
