Second Hand The Young Alexander

Alex Rowson explores the childhood, education and early career of Alexander the Great, examining the experiences that shaped his development as a ruler and commander. Drawing on archaeological discoveries alongside ancient accounts, the book places Alexander within the royal court and military culture of Macedonia.

It considers his relationships with his parents, Philip II and Olympias, his education under Aristotle, his friendships and his preparation for warfare. The narrative follows his early campaigning, the road to Chaeronea and the events surrounding his accession, before examining his emergence as king.

Maps and colour photographs of archaeological sites and objects help readers visualise the landscape and material world discussed. Arranged in two parts, “The Prince” and “The King”, the book connects Alexander’s formative years with the reign that followed. It offers an accessible study for readers interested in ancient biography, Macedonian history, archaeology and the development of one of antiquity’s most influential military leaders.
