Christopher Gravett examines the events leading to the Battle of Hastings and the Norman conquest of England in 1066. The book introduces the opposing commanders, William of Normandy and Harold II, and explores the organisation, equipment and fighting methods of their armies.

Chapters follow the preparations for invasion, the Norwegian campaign and the arrival of the Norman army before tracing the battle itself. The account considers the critical stages of the fighting, including the feigned retreats, final assault, death of Harold and Norman victory, followed by the aftermath of the conquest.

Illustrated with colour artwork, maps, photographs and historical images, this volume combines a narrative of the campaign with material showing the soldiers and battlefield. It also includes a battlefield guide, chronology, further reading and notes on wargaming the battle. Published as number 13 in Osprey’s Campaign series, this 96-page paperback provides a focused introduction to one of the defining campaigns in English history.
