A vivid account of Rome’s conquest of Greece and its transformation from a regional Italian power into the dominant force in the eastern Mediterranean. Beginning with the first Roman military intervention in Greece in 229 BC, Robin Waterfield charts the Illyrian and Macedonian wars, the defeat of Philip V, the proclamation of Greek freedom, the expansion of Roman control and the final destruction of Macedonian independence. Waterfield also considers whether Roman expansion followed a deliberate policy of conquest and examines how contact with the older Greek civilization affected Roman culture and identity. Illustrated with maps and black-and-white images.
