On a summer’s day in 216 BC, Hannibal’s Carthaginian army confronted a substantially larger Roman force near Cannae in southern Italy. The resulting battle became one of antiquity’s most celebrated tactical victories and one of the most destructive defeats ever suffered by Rome.

Gregory Daly examines the campaign and battle from the perspective of the men who fought there. He reconstructs the composition, organisation, equipment, tactics and command structures of the Roman and Carthaginian armies, while also considering the physical and psychological experience of combat. Particular attention is given to Hannibal’s leadership, the encirclement of the Roman army and the reasons the Carthaginians achieved such an overwhelming victory.

An extensively researched study of interest to readers of ancient warfare, Roman military history, Hannibal and battlefield tactics. Illustrated with ten black-and-white figures and seven maps and including notes, bibliography and index.
