This highly illustrated study compares the Athenian and Persian triremes that fought during the Graeco-Persian Wars of 499–449 BC. Nic Fields examines the construction, design, performance and tactical employment of these ram-armed, triple-oared warships, including the Persian reliance upon experienced Phoenician vessels and crews.
The book follows the opposing fleets through the battles of Artemision and Salamis and the fighting at the Eurymedon River. It also explores the men who fought aboard the ships, including Athenian citizen hoplites, Scythian archers and Persian marines, together with the role of Artemisia, the Karian queen and Persian naval commander.
Illustrated throughout with colour ship profiles, technical drawings, battle scenes, maps and photographs by Adam Hook.
