Robin Lane Fox’s major biography of Alexander the Great traces the Macedonian king’s life from his upbringing at the court of Philip II through his conquest of the Persian Empire and campaigns extending from Greece and Egypt to Central Asia and India.
Drawing upon ancient literary sources, archaeology, inscriptions, coins and the geography of Alexander’s campaigns, the author examines his military leadership, political ambitions, religious beliefs and relationships with his officers and companions. The book considers both Alexander’s extraordinary achievements and the violence, uncertainty and personal mythology that surrounded his rule.
The narrative covers the major battles of the Granicus, Issus and Gaugamela, the capture of the Persian capitals, the campaigns in Bactria and Sogdiana, the invasion of India and the difficult return through the Gedrosian Desert. It also explores Alexander’s efforts to combine Macedonian and Persian traditions and the circumstances of his death in Babylon.
The volume includes campaign maps, black-and-white illustrations, extensive notes, addenda, bibliography and index. This is the original Allen Lane hardback first edition, published in 1973. The work remains one of Robin Lane Fox’s best-known studies of the ancient world.
