Editor : Geoffrey Best and Andrew Wheatcroft

War, Economy and the Military Mind

Condition

Good in good dust jacket.

The dust jacket shows general rubbing, surface scuffing and handling marks, with wear and slight creasing around the edges, corners and spine ends. The spine is mildly faded, but the principal lettering and artwork remain clear. No substantial tears or areas of loss.

The boards and binding appear sound, with light shelf wear around the extremities. The page edges show mild age-related toning. Some pencil marginal marks, underlining and a brief handwritten annotation are present within the text, as shown in the photographs. The pages otherwise appear clean and complete. Please refer to the supplied photographs for the book’s exact condition.

A collection of scholarly essays examining the relationship between European society, economic development and military institutions from the end of the Napoleonic Wars to the First World War.

The contributors explore armies and navies from within, considering regimental identity, professional culture, military technology and the pressures placed upon the armed forces by changing political and social conditions. Later essays examine the wider effects of military expansion, including German naval policy, the British armaments industry, Russian wartime production and the relationship between international law and military power. Together, the essays trace the development of increasingly complex and costly military institutions during the century preceding total mobilisation in 1914.
