Condition
Good. Original publisher's green cloth with red and gilt decoration. Inscription to front end paper. Boards remain bright with light rubbing, minor marks and slight bumping to the corners. Spine has light wear to the head and foot with a small abrasion near the lower edge. Internally sound with light to moderate foxing throughout, particularly to the endpapers and title pages. Pages are otherwise clean and firmly bound with no loose pages noted. A solid example of this increasingly uncommon Boer War-era fourth impression.

A scarce early impression of Under the Sjambok by George Hansby Russell, published by John Murray in 1899. This Fourth Impression was issued during the opening year of the Second Boer War and follows an Englishman's experiences in the Transvaal, blending adventure, political intrigue and contemporary commentary on conditions in southern Africa immediately before the outbreak of war.
Issued in the distinctive publisher's dark green cloth with the striking red sjambok whip design to the front board, this is an attractive example of late Victorian imperial fiction closely associated with the Boer War period.
