Condition
Good (antiquarian) / Fair+ overall due to binding wear.
Large-format cloth boards show general rubbing and edge wear, with noticeable wear to the spine and areas of splitting/fraying at the hinges/joints. Internally, pages show age-toning and some spotting/foxing consistent with a late-Victorian volume, but the text and images remain clear and legible. A solid, serviceable copy of a scarce illustrated bound volume, best suited to collectors and readers who prioritise content and period presence over a fine binding.

A substantial and visually striking bound volume of The Navy & Army Illustrated, one of the great late-Victorian British service periodicals, produced at the height of the Empire and packed with contemporary coverage of military and naval life. Volume V (Oct 1897–Mar 1898) presents a rich snapshot of the armed services at the end of the nineteenth century, combining readable reportage with an exceptional pictorial record.
The volume is heavily illustrated throughout, with numerous period photographs, full-page portrait plates of senior officers, and engraved scenes that together make it as valuable for collectors and researchers as it is for display. Articles and features range across the Royal Navy and British Army, reflecting the technology, personalities, institutions, and everyday realities of service life in the 1890s. For anyone interested in Victorian Britain, imperial military culture, uniform history, or primary-source illustration, this is a rewarding and impressive reference volume.
A scarce survival in this large-format bound form, and increasingly difficult to source in complete, intact condition.
