Arthur A. Baumann’s The Last Victorians presents portraits and reflections on prominent figures in British political and literary life during the Victorian era. Published by Ernest Benn Limited in 1927, it offers a retrospective view of the personalities and traditions that shaped nineteenth-century public life.

Baumann writes from personal observation and acquaintance with many of his subjects, combining recollection with commentary on their character, influence and place in history. Figures discussed include the Marquess of Salisbury, Benjamin Disraeli, Joseph Chamberlain, Lord Randolph Churchill, Anthony Trollope, George Wyndham, Viscount Grey and the Earl of Oxford.

The volume opens with a discussion of the Victorian tradition. Its listed illustrations include a photographic frontispiece of Salisbury, portraits and caricatures of leading public figures, and a facsimile letter from Salisbury. These provide a visual accompaniment to Baumann’s accounts.

This English-language hardback will interest readers of Victorian biography, British political history and literary memoirs, particularly those seeking a contemporary observer’s perspective on the public figures of the period.
