A scarce early account of the police and paramilitary forces involved in maintaining order and taking part in military operations in South Africa from the late nineteenth century into the early twentieth century.

J. E. M. Thursby Attwell recounts episodes involving the various forces that policed South Africa, beginning around the period of the Anglo-Zulu War and continuing through later conflicts, rebellions and internal-security operations. Rather than presenting a formal institutional history, the book brings together narratives of campaigns, confrontations and individual acts of service and bravery.

The volume includes numerous black-and-white photographic plates depicting senior figures and serving officers, among them General Louis Botha, General “Tim” Lukin and Colonel Roy, together with photographs of mounted formations and police units on parade.

Privately published and printed by The Natal Witness in Pietermaritzburg around 1926, this is the scarce original edition and an uncommon source for the history of the South African Police and related military forces.
