A scarce limited reprint of the regimental history of the 1st Battalion Essex Regiment during the South African War of 1899–1902. Written by Brevet-Major A. G. Pratt, the work records the battalion’s service in the Boer War and preserves a detailed account of its movements, operations, officers and casualties. As a regimental history based closely on the battalion’s own experience, it offers a valuable contemporary-style narrative for collectors and researchers of the campaign.

This 1998 Boer War Books edition was produced in a limited run of 125 copies, and this example is numbered 86. It includes folding visual material and appendices such as the roll of officers, warrant officer, non-commissioned officers and men who died in the campaign, making it especially useful for regimental, genealogical and Anglo-Boer War research.
