This striking Edwardian volume captures the British experience in the South African War (1899–1902) through a rich visual album of photographs, engravings, military portraits and campaign scenes. Published by George Newnes Ltd in London around 1900, the work was conceived as both a contemporary record and a commemorative piece — showing the imperial British soldier in khaki at the dawn of modern warfare, and the varied theatres, characters and landscapes of the war in South Africa.
Key features of the title include:
- A sweeping collection of period photographs: portraits of soldiers, mounted troops, Boer fighters, colonial units, and campaign life in field camps and on the move.
- Visual treatment of uniform, equipment and environment: from the newly-supplied khaki service dress of British troops, to Boer commandos, colonial contingents and African auxiliaries, the volume offers a compelling snapshot of the material culture of the campaign.
- Representation of the war’s geography and scope: scenes of veldt warfare, sieges, mounted charges, trench works, blockhouses, and the later phases of the conflict; the book provides a broad sense of place, action and experience.
- A collectible piece of military-history publishing: large-format, contemporary to the war itself, this album stands at the intersection of reportage, imperial propaganda and material culture — valued both for historical detail and as a display volume.
A sought-after and historically significant work, ideal for collectors of the Boer War, British Army history, colonial campaigns, uniform and photographic history, and for libraries seeking a visual reference on late-Victorian/Edwardian warfare.
